Bookshops have stayed shut for a while because books were not classified as non-essential items in the new regulations that followed lockdown. But there’s good news now — bookshops in India are opening for home delivery. That’s two birds with a single stone. You are supporting book stores as well as receiving books for your pleasure (or study). We’ve been making do with titles from our own shelves and e-books, so why not support a book store while you get yourself a physical copy? Independent bookshops have opened up in Delhi and Bangalore and big chains like Crossword are also opening their stores in select cities. Publishers like Roli Books and Niyogi Books have opened online orders from their catalogue. Life in a pandemic is strange for the book publishing industry. It is good to see that booksellers have been creative with the situation — some have partnered with food apps like Swiggy and Zomato for delivering books to homes.

This is a list (SKIP to list) of bookshops in India that undertake book delivery. The location is only an indicator. Some stores might deliver outside the main city while some insist on a pick up. The guidelines aren’t clear but you can always give a call and enquire if they can provide you books if you stay close enough to their location. Remember bookstores delivering books at home come with a big asterisk. All activities might be suspended if your city enters into a red zone. So confirm whether the store is open for delivery before you place an order. Home delivery of books in India

Keep in mind that many of the stores may be understaffed for health reasons or dealing with many orders. Also, safety above everything else. If your region has restrictions in travel, do follow the rules instead of putting yourself and others at risk. Books are awesome, but not at the risk of health.

A few tips before you place an order to your order for books easier:

• Confirm whether there is book delivery in your area.

The rules are constantly changing because of the green, orange and red zones. So confirming first would save time on both sides.

• Keep a list of books ready

Browse the catalogue or website or your own wishlists and note down the books you might be interested in.

• How to place an order?

Each store accepts a different method of order. Some are open on DMs via their social media channels, others through Whatsapp while others require an email or an order via a phone call.

• Give complete contact details

Make sure you give all contact details to ensure smooth delivery including your name, address, a landmark and phone number.

• How to pay?

The payment policies vary according to the store. Paytm, Google Pay, direct bank transfer are most popular. Ask about how to make a payment to avoid confusion later on.

• Delivery/pick up

Some bookshops listed below are open to customers. This means you can actually visit the store and choose your books. Note that  you have to follow the rules of the store (some have a limit on the number of people that can be accommodated at a time). Use masks and carry a sanitiser with you.

Some stores encourage placing an order beforehand so that you can go and pick up books. There are stores and publishers who deliver via other service providers. For example, DC books in Kerala has tied up with Zomato, many bookstores in Bangalore deliver via Dunzo or Swiggy.

• Be kind

Be polite to the staff at bookstores. Also don’t forget that all delivery is subject to the rules and regulations that vary according to the Covid numbers in the city.
