This cover will catch anybody’s eye at a bookstore. The title says ‘Facebook’ and the doodled woman on the cover suggests mystery. Who is she? Did she invent Facebook? What kind of women inhabit these stories? True to the cover, the stories remain fantastic too.

The cover calls for an essay dedicated to it. It really is one of the best book covers from India in 2020. At first glance, there’s a woman with wings and a flying moth signifying the importance of wings in the novel. There’s Faiz’s poem written on the cover. And if you could see the spine, there’s a Hindu motif. The cover is an amalgamation of religions, two countries with similar cultures, traditions, and modernity, and art, all in one.

3. These, Our Bodies Possessed by Light by Dharini Bhaskar

The abstractness and the pleasing colour palette makes the reader understand how families are made of smaller units of members and how they pitch in together to keep the family afloat. This novel could not have gotten a nicer cover—it is perfect.

The hairy background and the large white letters that spell out the title are eye catching. I love the animal motifs, and I wonder why is the coconut tree upside down, making me expect something surreal in this socio-political novel.

I love the details on the cover. Skulls, camera, skeletal legs, chained men—What could this book be about?

I love the simple cover of Estuary for the striking tones of blues and for the reflections of the father and son in the water.

7. Principles of Prediction by Anushka Jasraj

Jasraj’s stories are pleasing, discomfiting and little strange and the cover effectively captures those sentiments with its surreal figures and pleasing colour palette.

8. Sugarbread and Inheritance by Balli Kaur Jaswal

Balli Kaur Jaswal’s books have been republished in 2020 with matching covers. Sugarbread shows me a shared meal and I am curious wwhat how food is woven into the story. Inheritance shows me a family, possibly fighting for an inheritance. The lovely design and striking colours tell me these books promise fun, entertainment and a good story.

9. Gravepyres school for the Recently Deceased by Anita Roy

It can’t get better than a black and white cover with vultures for a graveyard book about dead people. I also love the detail in the ‘O’ in the author’s name.

10. Girl Made of Gold by Gitanjali Kolanad

The black and green remind me of a dimly lit forest hiding secrets and that’s exactly what this literary thriller is—as you go deeper, you are engulfed by the twists in the mystery of a missing girl, hairpin, and a golden statue.
